Rain: Her Lifeline Chapter 1

Meroko Yui stood atop of the Koyama roof, staring up at the light of the stars, much like she and her partner Takuto used to do. The only difference... no Takuto. The cat shinigami had been spending more and more time with Mitsuki Koyama, their charge.

Meroko, like any good friend would be, was absolutely thrilled for her two friends, although she couldn't help but feel the spark of jealousy that surged through her every time she saw them together.

Meroko, for as long as she could remember, had always felt the pain of unrequited love. Izumi, her first partner, and Takuto. The dog, the cat, and the rabbit... what an odd combination.

The pink rabbit shinigami had also felt the pain of betrayal. You know the old saying... with love there is pain. Mitsuki had fallen in love with Takuto. Then again, Meroko couldn't blame them. They loved each other. Izumi tricked her and left her out in the rain. Fuzuki Koyama had...

'Wait... Fuzuki... Koyama? Who's she? And... how did she betray me?'Meroko thought to herself, her eyes reflecting pain and confusion. In the dusty darkness of her mind, she remembered something.

Flashback

Two girls, one about fourteen, the other around twelve, were sitting on a porch, flowers surrounding them. The fourteen-year-old had on a light green dress, her brown curls held up by a light green ribbon. The twelve-year old was wearing a blue middle-school uniform, her light pink hair pulled back by a dark red ribbon.

"Moe-chan! Thank you! I knew you'd understand!" The brunette exclaimed, hugging the pink-haired tween tightly, as said pinkette just smiled. "It's nothing, Fuzuki-san!" The pink-haired girl giggled, her eyes closed in joy.

End Flashback

Meroko blinked as the scene played before her. "That was..." The pink-haired shinigami was cut off as another scene played before her.

Flashback

The same brown haired girl, Fuzuki, was standing in the same garden, only it was raining. Both she and a handsome blond-haired boy next to her looked completely shocked. In front of the pair was a crying pink-haired girl. The two looked a bit older, Fuzuki around eighteen, and 'Moe' sixteen. The blond-haired boy looked about Fuzuki's age.

"Moe-chan! It's not what you think..." Fuzuki stopped, looking at her friend sympathetically.

"F-Fuzuki-san... how could you?" Moe whispered. She shut her light pink eyes tightly, and Moe ran away crying.

"Moe-chan!"

End Flashback

Meroko looked at her red-gloved hand. "My name... My real name was Moe... Rikyo Moe... and I... after all that I...!" Meroko's mouth went dry. Her eyes went wide, and another flash sent her to the ground.

Flashback

Moe ran as fast as her legs could carry her through the slippery wet rain. The dirt path in front of her had transformed into a river of mud. The pinkette dropped to her knees in the mud, taking out a small knife.
"Fuzuki-san... I'm so sorry... have a nice life with Seijuro-san..." Moe whispered before slitting her wrists and falling to the ground.

End Flashback

Meroko's eyes snapped open. "I remember... everything... how could I...? And for such a stupid reason! Fuzuki... Seijuro... why?'' The pink rabbit shinigami felt a sudden pang in her heart. Meroko clutched her heart, eyes wide. The pang suddenly grew into searing pain. Meroko gasped and dropped to her knees, one hand flat on the ground, the other clutching her heart as a dark light engulfed her.

Takuto walked outside and stretched. Mitsuki was fast asleep, so he decided to take a little walk. The blue cat shinigami jumped when he heard a scream pierce through the quiet night sky.

'That sounded like Meroko...'Takuto thought, flying up to the roof. His eyes widened when he saw his pink-haired comrade on her hands and knees, gasping for breath.

"Meroko!" Takuto yelled, running over to her. "Come on... you couldn't have remembered... You've gone, what, fifty, sixty years without anything like this going on? Not only that... you're always nagging me not to break the rules... if you're gone, who's gonna nag me, huh?" Takuto said, shaking her, doing his best to hold back a sob.

Meroko was on the ground, blinking back tears and her breath was quick and shaky. She looked up, her pink eyes full of tears. "T-Takuto...I love you." She whispered, her voice cracking ever so slightly.

"I know that, idiot. You can't... how... why?" Takuto whispered.

"Takuto, stop it. And you know... you might have always thought I loved Izumi-kun... but it's not true. I love you. I always will." Meroko whispered, a sad smile gracing her features. Her eyes were shimmering with tears, and she sobbed a bit. "I feel calm..." She spoke, her eyes closing slightly.

Takuto looked down. Meroko had started to disappear, the dark light increasing rapidly.

Takuto's eyes widened. He looked to the pink haired shinigami and swallowed the lump in his throat. "Meroko... open your eyes... don't feel calm! Okay, wake up!"

Meroko opened her eyes slightly. "Takuto... I'm sorry." She said, her pink eyes scanning him up and down.

Takuto looked at the shinigami as if she had gone crazy. "Sorry? What are you sorry for? Don't feel sorry for me, argue with me! Remember, when we first became a team, we reallydidn't like each other! And, even now," Takuto looked at Meroko lovingly. "We still don't..."

Meroko sat up, well as much as her body would let her. "Could you.. even just for one minute... believe that you love me? Pretend I was Mitsuki?"

Takuto's blue-gray eyes began to well up. "Meroko, please, I..."

"PLEASE!" Meroko sobbed out. "Make my final moments my best..."

Takuto shut his eyes tightly and kissed Meroko full on the lips. Meroko soon closed her eyes, tears cascading down her cheeks.

A second later, the two separated and Takuto wiped stray tears away. "Goodbye, Meroko..." the cat shinigami sighed out. The pink-haired rabbit shinigami had disappeared.

"Meroko... I loved you, and I always will." Takuto could swear he heard Meroko's soft voice being carried off by the winds.

"Takuto... I love you..."

Takuto felt something wet on his shoulder, and looked up. The clouds covered the Full Moon.

Rain.

Meroko's lifeline.

A/N: I relize this could never happen. Meroko's full shinigami, and Takuto's only half.

Still, I like this fic.
